It is feasible he wants to return to his hometown and wear the jersey of the German champions again. The Munich-born striker was let go from Bayern's academy at the age of 10 for disciplinary reasons. There are rumours that both Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich may pursue Adeyemi next summer. With Karim Adeyemi, currently playing for Red Bull Salzburg, Germany might even have a true number nine again, following years of employing attacking midfielders up front. They will likely lead Germany into the second part of this decade. Meanwhile, Serge Gnabry played in an inverted role on the right side and made many drives towards the goal, scoring three times as a result. Against Armenia and Iceland, Sane played close to the touchline in an isolated role, so he could go into one-on-ones where his biggest strength lies. It paid off instantly.įlick knows he cannot solely rely on the aptitude of his attacking players and needs to be specific with his instructions. When Flick decided to introduce tactical changes, like moving Leroy Sane from the right to the left wing, he spoke with Sane's Bayern coach, Julian Nagelsmann, to make sure that the two were on the same page. Frank Kramer, who is managing Arminia Bielefeld, a club without any current German international players, has publicly confirmed that even he is allowed to "make suggestions". He has also encouraged the managers of the Bundesliga to pitch tactical ideas for the national team. He is in contact with coaches such as Chelsea's Thomas Tuchel, Manchester City's Pep Guardiola and Paris St-Germain's Mauricio Pochettino, because all three coach German internationals. That said, Flick is by no means only keeping his eyes on his former employer and ignoring the other clubs. Hansi Flick won two Bundesliga titles and the Champions League in his 18 months in charge of Bayern Munich ![]() Since that approach is a typical element of Bayern's footballing identity and many of the key players are under contract at the German champions, the national team is becoming more Bavarian - as it returns to the style that served them so well between 20. Defensive hesitation and a safety-first approach - which characterised their play - are in the past as Flick demands a high tempo, progressive and high pressing style. When Germany lost possession, there was no counter-pressing to win the ball back.īy adopting the same tactical approach as he did at Bayern, Flick has already increased Germany's ability to keep the pressure on their opponents. The lack of movement in Germany's attacks meant the North Macedonian defence was rarely outmanoeuvred. They had plenty of possession but moved slowly down the field. That defeat by North Macedonia, who were ranked 65th in the world at the time, accentuated all the things that were wrong with the German team in the latter stages of Low's tenure. New boss Hansi Flick, who joined after 18 months in charge of Bayern Munich, has guided them to four wins from four qualifiers, including three clean sheets and a return to the 'Bavarian' approach on which Germany have based much of their success. However, with Monday's return fixture in North Macedonia looming, Germany's fans are seeing reasons for optimism again. The combinators which we have just talked about will help us with this. Here I will demonstrate how we can use Church encoding to implement boolean logic. This combinator may seem particularly odd at first sight, but it will come in handy, trust me! Booleans and boolean logic The Mockingbird combinator takes a function and applies it to itself. ![]() We can use the Cardinal to flip the arguments of a function as follows: const subtract = a => b => a - b In JavaScript: const C = f => a => b => f(b)(a) The Cardinal is a function which takes another function, who has 2 arguments, and flips those arguments. The Kite is a function which takes two arguments and returns the second argument. a function which will always return the same value no matter what argument you give it. ![]() We can partially apply this function to give us a constant function, ie. The Kestrel is a function which takes two arguments and returns the first argument. The Identity combinator is the simplest combinator of all, it is a function which takes a single argument and returns that argument. You will notice that most of the popular combinators happen to be named after birds, and this is no coincidence! These names originate from a popular puzzle book, To Mock a Mockingbird, whose author Raymond Smullyan decided to give the combinators bird names, in honour of the mathematician and combinatory logician Haskell Curry`s love of birds and bird watching. Some of them may seem trivial and pointless to begin with, but we will see how they can be used to implement formal systems and perform useful computations later on. There are certain combinators which crop up again and again and have useful applications, and we will introduce some of these next. z does not appear in the function parameters so this is not a combinator. ![]() CombinatorsĬombinators are simply (pure) functions where all variables in the body of the function are bound to a variable in the head.Ī simple example of this in Lambda calculus:Īnd in JavaScript: const combinator = (x, y) => x Shortly we will look at how we can implement Church encoding for boolean logic and arithmetic of natural numbers. The way we do this is through Church encoding (named after Alonzo Church). In fact, we can compute anything - lambda calculus is Turing complete! Essentially we have a language where the only primitive data type is a function!Īmazingly, from this we can implement operators, data structures and formal systems such as boolean logic and arithmetic. With lambda calculus, all we get out of the box are variables, function abstraction, and function application. This StackBlitz demo contains examples of all of the functions discussed and used in this article. Much of what I write about in this article is inspired by the puzzle book To Mock a Mockingbird, by Raymond Smullyan, and also the 2 part YouTube series, A Flock of Functions by Gabrial Lebec. ![]() This is a follow up to my previous article, An introduction to Lambda Calculus, explained through JavaScript, which I recommend reading first if you are not familiar with lambda calculus. In particular I will use JavaScript to demonstrate how we can use lambda calculus to implement boolean logic and basic arithmetic. So, proof search of SBVr and BVr is at least ptime-complete.In this article I will talk about Church encoding, the mechanism by which we can encode operators and data using lambda calculus. Despite SBVr is a minimal extension of SBV its proof-search can compute all boolean functions, as linear lambda-calculus with explicit substitutions can compute all boolean functions as well. This simulates the substitution that occurs in a beta-reduction. The role of the new renaming operator of SBVr is to rename channel-names on-demand. Completeness and soundness follow from simulating linear beta-reduction with explicit substitutions as processes. Under any strategy, a sequence of evaluation steps of any linear lambda-term M becomes a process of proof-search in SBVr (BVr) once M is mapped into a formula of SBVr. SBVr and its cut free subsystem BVr are complete and sound with respect to linear lambda calculus with explicit substitutions. We prove that the cut elimination holds on SBVr. We introduce the logical system SBVr which extends SBV by adding a self-dual atom-renaming operator to it. SBV is a deep inference system that extends the set of logical operators of multiplicative linear logic with the non commutative operator Seq. ![]() ![]() ![]() If I, an academic philosopher, could win over the editor of what was then America’s preeminent publication for progressive ideas, surely millions of other converts would swiftly follow. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the publication of Animal Liberation. The process has made me wonder what my younger self would have thought if he had known that, 48 years later, meat consumption would be higher than ever. I have been asking myself this question recently while working on Animal Liberation Now, which renews and updates my earlier book. I never could have predicted that vegan living and carnivorousness might rise in tandem in the same society. And yet the paradoxical fact remains: Even as the ethical arguments for avoiding meat have become better known, meat consumption has risen not only in countries that are emerging out of poverty, but in the U.S. I believed I had proved that there was no reasonable defense for animal cruelty.Īt the time, my position was widely considered radical, even bizarre. Though I described how animals are forced to endure extreme suffering on factory farms and in laboratories, my appeal was to rationality, not emotion.
